Emma is definitely an expert tier hostess. I’m a party-thrower (but was never a theatre kid). I was just raised by parents who hosted dinner parties, drinks by the pool, summer lunches. The difficulty I find is the unpredictability of guests. I often joke that when I host something I’ll either have 5 people arrive or 50: and I never know which! I know aspiring hosts who’ve been so disappointed by a poor turnout they just never try again.

Yes, in talking with Camp, it seems like a lot of trial and error goes into figuring out how many will actually show up. There can be a learning curve!

Absolutely- and in my case I’ve moved a lot (different countries) and getting the local vibe for hosting is always a challenge. I guess not being deterred is the key!

I love that her last name is Camp. Coincidence or did she change it to fit the profile? Fantastic and inspiring. I will be plotting my next hosting event in emulation.

I've been organizing events for 20 years that range from house parties to academic conferences and international tours. We 💯 need more people who are willing to go out on a limb and risk potentially coming off as cringe.

We started hosting monthly parties after Covid and invited mostly families with kids, but plenty of single people too, from church and community. We provided the main dish with meat from our ranch. The theme varied, but we always had the dads organize a fun activity for the kids. People just relaxed and had a beer or wine.

Our daughter and her husband hosts a weekly Sips and Smokes. They make fun cocktails and smoke pipes and cigars out on the deck. Mostly they just talk.

Our son founded a debate society in San Francisco with a few friends. It started with 35 people at the first one. Now they have over 600. Drinks are included at the event and then they all go to a local bar.

We are trying to do our part…
